11am EDT - Popular Music in the Classroom by Naarah Callender and Erol Ozsever
Reframe the way you think about popular music in your classroom! Discover engaging activities and methods to further your students' musical experiences using pop music. This session advocates the importance of teaching popular music with hands-on exercises for student motivation, achievement, and understanding form and song structure.

More about Naarah Callender - Naarah Callender is an American music teacher living in Guangzhou, China. After graduating with her Bachelors in Music Education from Kennesaw State University, she embarked on her first journey to teach K-12 general music and choir in Seoul, South Korea. From Korea to her present life in China, she has been enjoying every moment of adventure, challenge, and new understanding that comes with being a traveler and immersing in a different culture. Naarah lives with her dog, Ollie, and cat Duke in the Nansha District of Guangzhou, where she has been teaching middle school general music and choir for four years.

More about Erol Ozsever - Erol Ozsever is a recognised and rewarded classical guitarist from Indiana. Captivated by the sound guitars make, he started playing at the age of 10. Erol’s passion of music has led him on such creative pursuits as rock bands, jazz ensembles, and producing popular music. He holds a Bachelor of Music in Guitar Performance with a minor in Recording Industry Management. In 2009 Erol graduated magna cum laude with a Master of Music degree from Jacobs School of Music of Indiana University, and in 2014 earned a PhD from the the same university. Erol has received numerous recognitions and competition prizes. He has performed in theaters, concert halls, and universities across the US, and taken part in master classes with a number of world-renowned performers. Erol currently resides in Florida, and teaches guitar at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Manatee School for the Arts in Palmetto, and Patel Conservatory in Tampa. He is also mentor for the Del Couch Music Education Foundation.


12pm EDT - Five Ways to Engage Your Students with Digital Technology by Steve Holley
Has moving to an online format brought to light a need for fresh and innovative ideas beyond the ones we were taught? How can we, as creative music educators, design and implement innovative solutions to music lessons? In this session, we’ll discuss how to use digital technology (like Solfeg.io) to supplement your teaching with efficient, productive, and musically worthwhile methods.

More about Steve Holley - Steve Holley is a GRAMMY nominated educator, performer, musical entrepreneur, and clinician. He served as the producer for the Commercial Music Program (CMP) at the Kent Denver School outside Denver, CO, for 19 years. During his tenure, the R&B, salsa, and jazz bands in the CMP were recognised by DownBeat Magazine’s Student Music Awards fifteen times, performed hundreds of gigs within the US, and in festivals abroad. Steve holds a Master of Music in Jazz/Classical Bass performance from the University of Memphis. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Music Education at Arizona State University, where his focus includes realizing curricula around popular music education. Steve has collaborated with National Association for Music Education, Jazz Education Network, Modern Band Colloquium. He currently serves on the board of the Association for Popular Music Education and is the author of the book “Coaching a Popular Music Ensemble”.


1pm EDT - Contemporary Vocal Basics and Beyond by Kat Reinhert
With the influx of popular music into music education, there often comes the question of how to best help the singers in these spaces: How to use a microphone? What are different techniques that can best help young students maintain good vocal health? How is singing in contemporary styles different than singing in classical styles? This presentation will address the basics of vocal function, discuss singing in contemporary styles, go over basic microphone technique and usage, and delve into a few nuanced stylistic differences that can quickly help students – and teachers – understand ways to use the voice in popular music spaces.

More about Kat Reinhert - Kat Reinhert is an accomplished performer, songwriter, voice teacher, and educator from New York City. After completing her Bachelors at The Manhattan School of Music she gained valuable teaching experience in K-12 general music settings through the non-profit organization Education Through Music. She left NYC to pursue a Masters in Jazz Pedagogy, and eventually earning a PhD specializing in popular music education in higher education settings from University of Miami Frost School of Music. Through these experiences, Kat discovered a passion for teaching, and has held numerous adjunct professor positions at several universities. She is a frequent presenter at conferences, and is currently the President of the board for the Association for Popular Music Education. Currently based in NYC, Kat is a sought-after pedagogue, clinician and consultant for students, practitioners and institutions.
