How to play “Uptown Funk” chords on the piano

Person playing piano

“Uptown Funk” by Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars is a great and super-fun song to start learning piano. It has only two chords and both are played on white keys only. Don't believe me? Just watch!

The easiest way to learn Uptown Funk on piano

Get ready for fun(k)!
Sit at your piano comfortably, facing the middle of the keyboard. Take your phone with the  Solfeg.io app installed and let the interactive song player guide you. You don't even have to read notes or try to keep in mind the chord diagrams!

Dm chord

The first chord in this song is D minor or Dm for short. To play it, press the three keys simultaneously as indicated by the blue keys on the screen.

Normally, you should press the keys with the thumb, middle finger, and pinkie of your right hand but you can use other fingers if it's easier for you.

If you're new to playing chords on the piano, break down the chord note by note first. Find the white key between a pair of two black keys (D) and press it with your right thumb. Leave one white key out and add your middle finger on the F key. Finally, put your pinkie on the A key. Press all three keys at once, that's the Dm chord for you!

G chord

Next comes the G chord. The shape of your right hand should stay the same, simply move it to the right and play another three white keys - G, B, and D. If you don't know the names of the notes, don't worry, simply find the blue keys shown on the app on your piano!

The real fun(k)

Before playing the whole song, practice switching between Dm and G… and then back to Dm and so on! It might take some time to get used to the movement. Start slowly and gradually increase the speed until you're comfortable to jam along with the song!
