The evolution of technology has revolutionized many industries. One of those industries is the music sector. It has had such a positive impact, providing numerous benefits to artists and musicians of all backgrounds and of all ages.

But it’s not uncommon to see that the music industry also has pitfalls where it uses technology. Being able to avoid these setbacks can leave music teachers and academies with the positives and without the negatives.

Benefits of Technology In the Music Industry

The benefits list can go on, but some of the main factors to focus on revolve around technology's accessibility. Because of this, naturally, so much innovation comes from different musicians from all over the world.

Unparalleled Accessibility

Technology provides accessibility in many different ways. All of which are incredibly beneficial.

  • Not everyone has the necessary transportation to take quality music lessons. Nowadays, many courses are online. This goes in hand with classes being able to participate in online music venue tours or concerts. Access through video and the internet has astronomically expanded the visibility and education of music.
  • Transportation is not the only reason some can’t attend music classes. The times in which music class is offered can affect working adults, among many more. Self-learning courses allow anyone to pick up music at any time.
  • Technology has also made it accessible so schools, music academies, and individuals can purchase instruments. Instruments can be delivered the next day with the likes of Amazon. This means not waiting to get into music and exploring your creativity.

Accessibility is related directly to affordability in some ways. However, the two are necessarily mutually exclusive. Let’s talk more about why technology makes the music industry more affordable.

Affordability

Affordability comes from many different aspects of technology being integrated into the music industry. There are many free resources available. Consider YouTube alone and all the different things you can learn, specific to the piano or the guitar.

Aside from YouTube, many different apps and educational resources exist online and through apps that can inspire artists. Social media platforms alone have provided an artist with the ability to be discoverable. Before, artists used to have to get up and move to music hubs like Los Angeles and Nashville.

Technology has also changed how musical instruments are made in the first place. They are made faster and more efficient, which can decrease the price of some types of instruments.

Innovative Solutions

Innovative solutions are much likelier to come by with technology. For instance, many independent artists can make adequate recording studios in their bedrooms! Technology has allowed equipment to soundproof and analyze the feedback from noise traveling around a room.

The recording equipment has improved so much that professional music is made in homes worldwide. This also helps with accessibility and affordability, as studio recording time can add up quickly.

Artists from all over the world can also co-collaborate, offering different ideas and approaches to music. Inspiration is never-ending when technology gets involved with music.

Technology Assists All Levels

Whether you are a beginner learning basic guitar tunes or an advanced soloist, music technology has something for everyone. Simulation and meta-music are something to consider. Not everyone can rock out in front of thousands of people. Virtual reality may change that regardless of what level you find yourself at.

This is just one way to get your practice in as a musician. Much like sports have different training tools, music has them as well. Whether it’s staying on the beat or improving the endurance of your vocals, technology has added tools to help practice these types of contests.

A Personal Approach

Technology allows musicians to learn at their own pace and according to their needs. The ability to playback videos or record themselves alone from their iPhone can make major improvements.

Not everyone learns the same way. Some students are more visual learners, while others are better when they are using a hands-on approach. Continuing to stick with learning styles and approaches that are conducive to their improvement is a great benefit of technology.

Pitfalls To Be On The LookOut For

While many benefits intersect with each other, it is easy to let technology control you rather than control it. Here are some of the areas to be mindful of when incorporating it into your music practice.

Lack of Hands-On Experience

At times there can be a lack of hands-on experience. When there is no option but to experience something through technology or the online world, this is better than nothing. However, nothing can replace the real simulation of experiencing something in person, and this is one of the reasons Solfeg.io is created for both classroom environment and self learning. Teachers are very important in guiding students in case of any challenges, or when possible.

This is particularly true when it comes to visiting historical music sites or concerts. The experience felt in person is incredibly impactful. It also can be said for watching someone else play an instrument to learn. At some point, being the doer is more important than the watcher.

Miscommunication In Interpretation

In-person instruction can clarify many things that can be easily misinterpreted or misunderstood online. This is specifically true with recorded learning content without room for live questioning. Finding a balance between in-person and online experiences can minimize this while keeping the affordability.

Looking for programs, apps, or resources that minimize as close to an in-person musical experience is also a great way to limit miscommunication.

Finding The Tools That Fit You

Not every tool was meant to work for each musician. Finding the tools and technology that best aids your music journey is important, And these tools may change as your music career advances. The wonderful thing about technology is that it has allowed individuals and the music industry to advance as a whole.

Technology will continue to evolve and bring new inventive approaches to how we play, create, and interpret music. With blogs such as these, we can take the time to research and find out what tools will best fit our needs.
